Das Gelände des sog Dschungles ist eine ehem. Bananenplantage in Dungay Creek, 10 Minuten von Murwillumbah in Northsouthwest-Queensland und gehört der britischen Produktionsfirma Granada, die mit diesem 30-Millionen-Set immerhin einiges an Arbeitsplätzen in die Region gebracht hat. It's probably the biggest British occupation since Basra. But unlike the beleaguered Iraqis, the citizens of northern NSW are unanimous: they want their big-spending British invaders to stay.

Yesterday morning, Sydney time, millions of British television viewers tuned into the latest instalment of I'm a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here!, a kind of Pommified Survivor crossed with Cecil B. DeMille, in which the contestants are forced to perform daily trials to secure food rations.

It's beamed live to the homes of as many as 10 million British prime-time viewers - well over a third of the total viewing audience.

Set in the Australian "jungle", it has every venomous antipodean creepy-crawly yet documented making a guest appearance. However, the one that most troubled the tremulous celebrities in yesterday's instalment of the nightly, two-week-long series turned out to be harmless.

Perhaps suitably, it was recently retired England spin bowler and wretched fieldsman Phil Tufnell, a featured celebrity, who identified it, yes, as a cricket.


Whatever the stature of reality television, the reality here is that at a cost of $30 million it is one of Australia's biggest TV productions, pouring money and jobs into the NSW-Queensland border economies.

The "top secret" set? A former banana plantation in a rainforest at Dungay Creek, about 10 minutes from Murwillumbah. Some jungle.

It is, after all, just an hour or so away from the opulent, creepy-crawly-free accommodation at the Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast. Other, less luxurious hotels and motels in Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads-Coolangatta are lodging the 400-strong Anglo-Australian crew.

I'm a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here! relies heavily on audience participation.

Viewers vote for their favourites, with the least popular being evicted (to, yes, Palazzo Versace, en route to London) until, Big Brother-style, only one remains.

But the biggest winners thus far appear to be Murwillumbah and surrounding towns. The show's producer, Granada, paid to have part of the road that leads into the Dungay Creek property sealed. And it has reputedly resuscitated the financial fortunes of the owner of the property, a farmer, who

has signed a confidentiality agreement that precludes him from even revealing his identity. Such is the secrecy that the set and the property are guarded by a Sydney security firm, to keep out reptiles; not of the native variety, but the prying British tabloid reporters, who are massed nearby, ready to sign up each of the evictees for tan "exclusive" story.

Neville Boyle took over the Murwillumbah Motor Inn only last year. He would have enjoyed full occupancy courtesy of Get Me Out Of Here! had he not kept a few rooms available for regulars.

Program executives are based at the motel, a short drive to the set at 2am, when rehearsals commence for the 6am live cross. "We're a 3-star hotel but they're getting five-star treatment," Mr Boyle says. "It's going to be a big shock when they go."

Keeping the Poms chipper has been the priority. There's even an unconfirmed rumour that they've ordered shipments of English beer.

"The longer they stay, the better it gets," says Paul Walters, president of the Murwillumbah Chamber of Commerce. "And there's the prospect of European versions of the show being produced here."

Granada is negotiating with French, German, Spanish and Australian networks for their versions of Get Me Out of Here!, which would also use the Dungay Creek site, in which Granada has made a heavy investment.

But one British tabloid journalist questions whether Dungay Creek would be sufficiently confronting for the average Australian celebrity.

He suggests that any Australian version of the program be set on the London underground, perhaps with Australians forced to survive on rations of warm beer, cold-chip butties and videos of Phil Tufnell's greatest cricketing feats.
